Gunung Tahan Expedition

Rising a majestic 2187m from pristine rainforest in Taman Negara National Park, Gunung Tahan is Peninsula Malaysia's highest peak. In English Gunung Tahan translates as 'Mount Endure' and this is not a climb for the faint-hearted but will be an unforgettable and inspiring achievement. The first successful expedition to the summit of Gunung Tahan was only completed in 1905 from Kuala Tahan, after numerous failed attempts steeped in mystery and superstition fueling the formidable reputation of this great mountain in local folklore. Since these early pioneers, trails have been established and  things  have improved dramatically but Tahan remains a challenge of strength and character.

Follow your guide across rushing rivers, through the twisted jungles and scrambling up tree roots as you ascend the steep slopes into the surreal land above the clouds in the Bonsai Forest at the summit. Notice the changes in the tropical rainforest around you as you trek through dense lowland dipterocarp forest with its thick canopy and steaming understor; gradually ascending into upper hill dipterocarp montane forest with magnificent trees rising a lofty 50-60 metres from gullies, their trunks and branches covered in mosses and orchids. Above around 1200m as temperatures plummit you will enter oak laurel forest where lychen and mosses cloak the trees and the canopy reduces dramatically in height allowing for more sunlight and an array of climbers, ferns and palms. As you climb further you will emerge into the magical and mysterious cloud forest and montane heathland with rare and fascinating carnivorous pitcher plants as you approach the summt.
