Kelah Sanctuary

Kelah, also known as Red Mahseer (Tor tombroides) is the 'King of the Fresh-Water Fish' and a giant growing up to 8kg over 40 years. It is the most expensive (and some say the tastiest!) fish in Malaysia reaching upto 100RM per kg and this, along with its slow growth and long life-cycle, these are some of the reasons for Kelah's observed decline, most likely from overfishing. There are now a number of Kelah Sanctuaries where the fish are protected around Malaysia to help conserve this species.

Kuala Juram Kelah Sanctuary is a 13km 4x4 drive inside Taman Negara from Merapoh entrance and here you can observe and feed the fish as well as trying your skill at catching the fish by hand before releasing them. You can visit the Kelah Sanctuary as part of our Jungle Explorer and Caving packages as well as part of a Family Fun Day event.
